Versailles Restaurant for an Excellent Cuban Meal in Miami

Line outside Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana on a Sunday evening.

Sometimes long waits are worth it. When I arrived at Versailles Restaurant in the Little Havana district of Miami, I was told the wait would be a half hour. It wound up being 25 minutes. When I was seated, it took a while for a waitress to come by. When I had finished eating, I had to wait a half hour for someone to bring me my check. All of those waits were worth it, though. My entire meal was phenomenal, and my $27 tab included two mixed drinks. Continue reading “Versailles Restaurant for an Excellent Cuban Meal in Miami”

I have always been leery of coming in to a cruise port on the day my ship is scheduled to depart. There is too much that can go wrong with flight delays and flat tires, and that can ruin the entire vacation. For my cruise to Cuba, I took it a step further. I flew into Miami two days in advance to enjoy the city. Some of that has been (or will be shortly) posted on this sight. For now, however, I want to deal with the biggest part of arriving early. I needed a place to stay, and I selected the Hilton Miami Downtown. In this post, I will describe the room, the wifi, and the facilities available. NCL Upgrade Advantage bid declined

The email saying my NCL Upgrade Advantage bid was denied. Norwegian sent me a separate email for each cabin for which I bid to upgrade.

I wrote previously about the NCL Upgrade Advantage program. If you want a nicer cabin than you originally paid for, you can bid to receive it at a discount. This complicates the process when cabin prices drop. Also, there are no guarantees. Unfortunately, my upgrade bids for my cruise on Monday were declined today. Here is what happened, as well as the lesson I learned about booking guarantee category staterooms. Continue reading “NCL Upgrade Advantage bid declined”

NCL Upgrade Advantage and price drops

Last week I wrote about the NCL Upgrade Advantage program. You have to be flexible, and you have to be OK with the cabin you actually paid for. Norwegian can offer a much nicer cabin at a steep discount through the upgrade program. However, if you know that moving to a nicer cabin is important to you then check out prices as the cruise approaches. It may be a better deal to simply call and pay the price difference. Things are starting to look that way on my cruise. Continue reading “NCL Upgrade Advantage and price drops”

Norwegian Upgrade Advantage cruise offer

Norwegian Upgrade Advantage welcome screen. This is the screen you see when following the link in the email or logging in to your account.

Three days ago, I booked a short cruise to Cuba. I am travelling in July on the Norwegian Sky, and I will sail alone. As a result, I booked an inexpensive ocean view guarantee cabin. That means I will have some natural light, but a small cabin and no control over its location. That is fine for solo cruising. Yesterday, however, I got an email from NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) offering me the chance to upgrade to a larger room. The Norwegian Upgrade Advantage program sets a minimum bid price, and then you say how much you would be willing to pay for a larger room. The program has some distinct advantages and disadvantages.
